Tasty Tacos

Website

Sometimes, you get a hankering for a taco, can’t stand the thought of going to Taco Bell, but don’t want the fanfare of a sit-down Mexican restaurant. Maybe it’s lunch time, and don’t plan on drinking that early, so a bar isn’t needed. Maybe it’s late–not too late!–and you need something to go with that nightcap.

Maybe you just want the best darn tacos in Des Moines.

With six locations in the area, all owned and operated by the same family (the one near the capital is marked, but they’re scattered all over the metro), the options are plentiful and the service standards are identical.

The award-winning taco starts with a flour tortilla—deep-fried to make it crunchy—after being stuffed with their seasoned beef. This is topped with shredded lettuce and cheese, and can be optionally ordered with chicken, pork or steak instead of the ground beef.

My recommendation: Steak Taco.

Also, they’re bigger than they look; two is plenty!

All the other standard Mexican cuisine–plus some surprises–are available: crunchy corn tacos, tostadas, nachos, enchiladas, and burritos. Queso blanco on tater tots (“totchos!”) are an excellent surprise side dish as well.
