Stomping Ground

Website

Just outside DC and only 10 min from DCA, 10 min from Old Town Alexandria and 20 min from the monuments, Del-Ray is a section of Alexandria that locals tend to know, especially those that moved out to Virginia looking for a cheaper place to live.  It’s a neighborhood with lots of little non chain places, Stomping Ground is one of those places.  Be warned if you are driving, parking can be tough in the area but there is a public lot that is $2 flat rate just off the Main Street.  When you get to Stomping Grounds, expect a line that can take a few, when I went it was out the door but moved reasonably quick.  You order everything at the counter and they will find you a seat.  You have your normal coffee shop choices for coffee but some boozy brunch cocktails.  They also have fresh squeezed juice that can change depending on the day.  The coffee is decent and the drip is a solid nice cup.  The food is why you go here though, specifically the biscuits or chicken.  The biscuits are nice and flakey and absorb all the flavors of whatever sandwich you get.  The chicken sandwich with friend chicken tenders, pickles (dill not bread and butter) and pimento cheese on a biscuit is a staple and should be tried.  You can also get the biscuit with just about whatever topping you want, for instance I tried the house made sausage, everything except the mayonnaise is home made here, with cheddar cheese and it was a really good breakfast sandwich.  If you are staying near the airport its a quick Uber ride and nice distraction from downtown DC.
